Loft Conversions
How long does a loft conversion take?
The factors that genuinely affect a loft conversion programme.
There is no fixed timescale that applies to every loft conversion. Programme length depends on the roof structure, the type of conversion, whether structural steelwork is needed, and how well the project is planned and coordinated before work starts on site.

What actually determines the timescale
The existing roof structure is one of the biggest factors. A conversion that fits within the existing roofline generally involves less structural work than one requiring a dormer or a full roof alteration.
Structural work, particularly steel beams to support the new floor, tends to be the most time-sensitive part of a loft conversion. Getting this stage right, with materials and trades properly coordinated, has a bigger impact on the overall programme than almost anything else.
Why some projects run long
Delays in loft conversions are rarely about the work itself taking longer than expected. More often, they come from poor sequencing: a trade arriving before the previous stage is finished, materials ordered too late, or design decisions made after work has already started.
Proper planning before construction begins, rather than during it, is what keeps a loft conversion moving at a predictable pace.
What to ask before you start
Ask what the programme looks like stage by stage, not just as a single end date. A clear, sequenced plan, covering structural work, first fix, insulation, and finishing, gives you a far better sense of what to expect than a single headline figure.
